Starting out…

I am a young, 25 (going on 26) year old millennial whose life is saturated with technology. As I am typing this in a busy Sydney train on my Dell laptop, my wireless noise-cancelling headphones are playing faint Billy Joel from my Spotify account while my Android smart phone is lightly vibrating with new notifications. Also, did I mention that I’m trying to use my Ipad at the same time?

This is not me trying to show off my device collection as much as it is to make a point. These days, some people might have less devices and some might have more. However, it is almost impossible to escape the wide reach that technology has on us. And yet, as I am beginning my first week of classes in Technology in Music Education (a core class for my Music Education degree), I find myself lost and confused. Lost because my knowledge of music technology is minimal AT BEST; confused because I don’t know how so much technology in my life yielded such poor results in my ‘techy savvy-ness’.

Nonetheless, I am quite excited though slightly nervous. Technology has been a tool I scarcely used either in teaching or my own music education (I guess you can count a metronome app on my phone as using technology?). Even so, maybe the reason for my technological-less educational existence can be attributed more to a lack of thought than lack of skill. At least I hope!

This is why this blog will serve as a journal of my own journey towards familiarising, researching, and exploring the possibilities that technology offers to all music students and educators.

I hope to make this blog a space primarily aimed towards those who are in the same boat as me. HOWEVER, that does not mean that everyone is not welcomed! In fact, commenting is greatly encouraged and sharing some new technological wisdom even more so, whether you’re a newbie like myself or a proper tech wizard! One of the best ways to learn is through each other’s experiences. At least in my personal opinion.

So strap in, get ready, and enjoy the ride!
